2 Cf., e.g., J. Armitage Robinson, St. Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians (London: James Clarke, 1928), 11–13; F. F. Bruce, The Epistles to the Colossians, to Philemon, and to the Ephesians (NICNT;

Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1984), 245; and Peter T. O’Brien, The Letter to the Ephesians (PNTC; Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1999), 57–58.

3 See esp. Andrew T. Lincoln, Ephesians (WBC 42; Dallas: Word, 1990), lxxiv, and idem, “The Theology of Ephesians” in The Theology of the Later Pauline Letters, by Andrew T. Lincoln and A. J. M. Wedderburn (New Testament Theology; Cambridge: Cambridge Univ. Press, 1993), 78–79. The general nature of the letter, its close relationship to Colossians, and its unusual language, style, and thought have led many scholars, including Lincoln, to conclude that the letter is pseudonymous. It seems improbable, however, that the author would copy the admonition not to lie found in Col. 3:9–10, make its language more emphatic (“each of you”), and bolster it with an allusion to Scripture (Eph. 4:25; cf. 4:15 and Zech. 8:16) all within a forgery of his own. On the genuineness of the letter, see esp. the judicious argument of O’Brien, Ephesians, 4–47. Cf. Hoehner, Ephesians, 2–61.
